Mapping Census 2000: The Geography of U.S. Diversity Data Tables |
Mapping Census 2000: The Geography of U.S. Diversity presents a synthesis of the basic patterns and changes in U.S. population distribution in the last decade. Each page features county-level detail for 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Each page also includes a small state-level map for a simplified view of the population theme. The report begins with general sections on the total population and overall diversity and then systematically maps data for race and Hispanic or Latino groups. The report can be found at www.census.gov/population/www/cen2000/atlas/.
The following data tables provide the mapped data values and are organized by book sections. The Census 2000 data in this report are based on the U.S. Census Bureau Redistricting (P.L. 94-171) Summary File. We also provide 2000 land area (used in the density calculations). The 1990 data have been reaggregated to Census 2000 geography (This update affected only five counties or equivalent entities: Denali and Yakutat Boroughs, Alaska; Halifax County, Virginia; and Gallatin and Park counties, Montana). The 1990 data also were reaggregated to create separate "Asian" and "Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander" groups for comparison with Census 2000 race categories. The April 1, 1990 Census figures in the tables below reflect Count Question Resolution changes but no other post-Census corrections or updates.
Special notes for all tables:
- All data (with the exception of the diversity indexes) are rounded to one decimal.
- Race data for Puerto Rico were not available (NA) for 1990.
- The result of dividing by zero is denoted as an X.
