Cities and towns include both incorporated places and populated places that are simply named locations with clustered or scattered buildings and a permanent human population. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is the official repository for populated place names in the United States. This map layer was compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey using information from GNIS and the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Cities and Towns of the United States map layer includes the locations of more than 35,000 towns and cities in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Descriptive information includes name and county location; the population value when known; Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) codes for the populated place, county, and State; and an indication of whether the city or town is a capital or a county seat.
