This site provides finding aids to the Historical Document Collection and online historical publications such as The Guardian: Origins of the EPA and The Guardian: EPA's Formative Years, 1970-1973. See the Frequently Asked Questions page for a variety of topics regarding EPA's establishment and functions. ** ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION ** Natural Heritage Network http://www.heritage.tnc.org/ The Natural Heritage Network represents the largest ongoing effort in the western hemisphere to gather standardized data on endangered plants, animals, and ecosystems and improve the public's access to appropriate biodiversity information. This project is a joint effort of The Nature Conservancy, the Association for Biodiversity Information, and many natural heritage programs throughout the U.S., Canada, Central America and the Caribbean, and South America. The resources accessible through this network include databases maintained by these natural heritage programs on the plants, animals, and natural communities that occur within their political jurisdiction. Use the navigational compass on this page to reach the specific programs that interest you. ** GOVERNMENT INFORMATION ** National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) http://www.nbii.gov/index.html The NBII, a U.S. Geological Survey-led initiative, is dedicated to the development of an electronic "federation" of biological data and information sources. Its success rests on a growing network of partners who share biological information. The goal of the NBII is to provide swift user access to biological databases, online tools for environmental and ecological data analysis, directories, and guides maintained by Federal, State, and local government agencies, non-governmental institutions, and private sector organizations in the United States and around the world. ** INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ** International Joint Commission (IJC) http://www.ijc.org/ The International Joint Commission assists governments in finding solutions to problems with the waters that border the United States and Canada. This site, available in English and French, has been recently revised. Currently, it offers full-text publications such as the International Air Quality Advisory Board's November 1998 Special Report on Transboundary Air Quality Issues and the IJC's Focus magazine. The November-December issue of Focus includes articles on the Strategic Plan for the IJC, Sea-to-Sea Overview of Transboundary Air Quality Issues, and Linking Water Quality to Wildlife and Human Health. Many other special reports, as well as information on treaties and agreements, are available from the Publications and About the IJC sections. ** BUSINESS/CORPORATE/NONPROFIT INFORMATION ** ELDIS: Electronic Development and Environment Information System http://www.ids.ac.uk/eldis/eldis.html ELDIS is funded by Danida, UNEP/Infoterra, and the UK Department of International Development and hosted by the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex. It is a gateway to information sources on development and the environment offering an easy route to the latest information, including free, full-text publications from a numerous international developmental organizations. The database ELDIS provides describes and links to a variety of information sources, including WWW sites, databases, library catalogs, bibliographies, and email discussion groups. Search for online documents, organizations and bibliographical information or use the subject and country guides to locate materials on your particular topic.
