The interactive mapping interface iGMT program is intended to make working with the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) easier. iGMT provides a graphical user interface for GMT and is written in the Tcl/Tk computer language. Besides supplying a user friendly way of handling GMT, iGMT comes with built-in support for many different geoscientific data sets, such as topography, gravity, seafloor age, hypocenter catalogs, plate boundary files, hotspot lists, CMT solutions etc.

Our software is a useful tool for learning GMT, taking advantage of both GMT's data processing capabilities and the increasing availability of geoscientific data sets in electronic form. More than 240 institutions world wide were registered iGMT users in 2004 using the program for map-making and teaching GMT.
iGMT has support for GMT 3.x and 4.x. The primary hardware platform iGMT is targeted on is UNIX in all its flavors, including PC-based LINUX. So far, we have heard from successful installations on the following operating systems: SunOS 5.6, Solaris 2.5.1-2.6, HP-UX10.01, DEC OSF, IBM AIX 4.1.x, 4.2.1, IRIX 4.0.5, 6.2-6.5, and LINUX (SuSE 5.1, 5.2; Redhat 4.2-8.0; Debian; Fedora Cores; Mac OS X).
iGMT is open source software under the GNU public license. However, we encourage our users to comply with the goals as set forth in the Student Pugwash pledge. For more information about iGMT, please refer to the iGMT on-line documentation, some example plots, or our EOS News article.
