Resources for Terrain Maps
The National Map Seamless Server is the ultimate location to explore and retrieve data. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the EROS Data Center (EDC) are committed to providing access to geospatial data through The National Map. An approach is to provide free downloads of national base layers, as well as other geospatial data layers. These layers are divided into framework categories: Places, Structures, Transportation, Boundaries, Hydrography, Orthoimagery, Land Cover, and Elevation. Also available via FTP.
GeoBase is a federal, provincial and territorial government initiative that is overseen by the Canadian Council on Geomatics (CCOG). It is undertaken to ensure the provision of, and access to, a common, up-to-date and maintained base of quality geospatial data for all of Canada. Through the GeoBase portal, users with an interest in the field of geomatics have access to quality geospatial information at no cost and with unrestricted use.
GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). GTOPO30 was derived from several raster and vector sources of topographic information. For easier distribution, GTOPO30 has been divided into tiles which can be selected from the map shown above. Detailed information on the characteristics of GTOPO30 including the data distribution format, the data sources, production methods, accuracy, and hints for users, is found in the GTOPO30 README file.
The Raster Roam Search will display the requested NGA standard raster product over the area of interest. An area can be selected by clicking on the image map, providing a center point, or by defining the center point using the GEOnet Names Server.
NASA ISS EarthKam Datasystem - ISS EarthKAM (Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle school students) is a NASA education program which enables students, teachers and the public to learn about Earth from the unique perspective of space. At the core of the program is a spectacular collection of digital images of Earth. The image collection and accompanying learning guides and activities are extraordinary resources to support classes in Earth science, space science, geography, social studies, mathematics, communications and even art.
The GLCF is a center for land cover science with a focus on research using remotely sensed satellite data and products to assess land cover change for local to global systems.
Daily Planet, a countinuously updating image of the earth, using scenes from MODIS TERRA
- A new dataset built for this server, available from Dec 1st 2007 as a beta test. This mosaic is continuosly updated with images from MODIS TERRA, which has almost global daily coverage. This layer is the most current, near-global image of the earth available. The resolution is 250m per pixel in the middle
of the swath, less on the edges.
Free Digital Elevation Model (DEM) Server. The cartographic data proposed here is in SDTS format. You will need a tool with which to manipulate and work with the data. ATDI proposes the complete package in ICS Map Server.
The downloadable 3" 1x1 Digital Elevation Models listed are based on data collected by the 2000 Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. SRTM data, in HGT format, can be downloaded. Also links to finding data for problematic mountainous areas worldwide.

Digital Elevation Model - Alaska - Digital elevation model (DEM) data are arrays of regularly spaced elevation values referenced horizontally either to a Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection or to a geographic coordinate system. The grid cells are spaced at regular intervals along south to north profiles that are ordered from west to east. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) produces five primary types of elevation data: 7.5-minute DEM, 30-minute DEM, 1-degree DEM, 7.5-minute Alaska DEM, and 15-minute Alaska DEM.

The CGIAR-CSI GeoPortal is able to provide SRTM 90m Digital Elevation Data for the entire world. The SRTM digital elevation data, produced by NASA originally, is a major breakthrough in digital mapping of the world, and provides a major advance in the accessibility of high quality elevation data for large portions of the tropics and other areas of the developing world. The SRTM digital elevation data provided on this site has been processed to fill data voids, and to facilitate it's ease of use by a wide group of potential users. This data is provided in an effort to promote the use of geospatial science and applications for sustainable development and resource conservation in the developing world. Digital elevation models (DEM) for the entire globe, covering all of the countries of the world, are available for download on this site. The SRTM 90m DEM's have a resolution of 90m at the equator, and are provided in mosaiced 5 deg x 5 deg tiles for easy download and use. All are produced from a seamless dataset to allow easy mosaicing. These are available in both ArcInfo ASCII and GeoTiff format to facilitate their ease of use in a variety of image processing and GIS applications. Data can be downloaded using a browser or accessed directly from the ftp site.
Ecuador DEMs from digitized topographic maps (1:50 000 and 1:100 000) -
All DEMs were generated from contour lines (database contain 30 000 000 digitized points) using the SAVANE system.
Datum is PSA56 for Ecuador. Projection is UTM zone 17* for Continental Ecuador, UTM Zone 15* for Galpagos. Elevation is in meters above see level. The files are in ArcView ASCII raster format. All files are zipped.

The Data Pool is an online archive that provides, without a charge, FTP access to selected LP DAAC data products from both the Terra and Aqua satellite platforms. The ASTER contribution is the Level-1B product over the United States and Territories. These data are populated on a two-year rolling archive basis. This means that an ASTER L1B data set older than 2 years (730 days since its acquisition) is removed from the Data Pool. MODIS collections span three varieties: Daily products are retained for an 8-day period; Composite products include at least one year's retention of 8- and 16-day products; Science collections are ad hoc temporary data sets staged and removed in short order based on special requests. They also include certain permanent collections.

The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth hosts - the best and most complete online collection of astronaut photographs of the Earth. Beginning with the Mercury missions in the early 1960s, astronauts have taken photographs of the Earth. Our database tracks the locations, supporting data, and digital images for these photographs. We process images coming down from the International Space Station on a daily basis and add them to the 747,704 views of the Earth already made accessible on our website. These images include 304,100 from the International Space Station.
