MrSID is an acronym for
Multi-resolution Seamless Image Database, a powerful wavelet-based
image compressor, viewer and file format for massive raster images that
enables instantaneous viewing and manipulation of images locally and
over networks while maintaining maximum image quality. Features include
unprecedented compression ratios while maintaining highest image
quality, true multiple resolutions, selective decompression, seamless
mosaicking and browsing.
Wavelet
Compression Technology - The sharp display of very large digital
files with minimal loading time is made possible by wavelet technology.
As of January 2005, the Library of Congress will be using two methods of
wavelet compression to serve large images: MrSID and JPEG2000. The key
feature of both is their use of tiling to compress digitized images,
which allows high compression with minimal loss of detail. Tiling also
gives both MrSID and JPEG2000 the ability to decompress only that
portion of an image requested by the user.

command line utility resets the blocksize of an input MrSID image. A
blocksize of 64 is recommended as optimal for MG3-encoded image files.
Resetting the MG3 blocksize to 64 may alleviate memory problems
encountered when attempting to view composite mosaic files in
third-party applications.
MrSID AVMrSID.dll - Addresses several
viewing issues when viewing .sid within ArcView 3.x, including
georeferencing and incorrect placement of .sid with associated .sdw
file. Also provides support for the MG3 .sid file format. Not supported
on ArcGIS.
