American Sentinel University Bachelor of Science, Geographic Information Systems

<-- Online GIS Degrees & Certificates

Our Geographic Information Systems degree (GIS) teaches students to use and develop databases containing spatial data. With an American Sentinel online GIS degree, students will learn about interpreting and visualizing spatial data for the purpose of uncovering relationships, patterns and trends.

GIS is a rapidly growing field, and a degree in GIS opens doors to a variety of careers. A GIS Bachelor degree can be used in science, CAD, enterprise systems, servers, mobile data and cartography. Its applications are endless - and increasingly necessary: national retail chains use GIS to determine where to open a new franchise; police use it to analyze crime data; transit systems use it to plot bus routes; even farmers use GIS tools to plan what crops to plant and where. Is a Geographic Information Systems degree right for you?

GIS professionals are problem-solvers who like applying technology to new fields. The GIS industry is perfect for someone who wants to work with software that visualizes data rather than displays numbers and charts.

American Sentinel University's GIS program teaches fundamental business and information technology skills and the specifics of geographic information systems. The program prepares students for entry into the GIS field, but provides training in information systems that befits other business areas as well.

Some American Sentinel students are already working in information systems, but they want a bachelor's degree in GIS to advance their careers. Others have only experienced GIS as an end-user and see an opportunity for a new career in an exciting field.

Objectives of the Bachelor of Science, Geographic Information Systems Degree Program In addition to attainment of general education learning objectives, graduates from the BS Geographic Information Systems will be able to:

  • Apply fundamental systems analysis and design concepts and problem-solving strategies to information technology problems.
  • Analyze, design, and implement solutions to business problems.
  • Create and test computer information systems solutions for business problems.
  • Design maps and interpret information from a variety of visual presentations of abstract geographic information.
  • Store and manage spatial data and create GIS solutions using GIS software.
  • Demonstrate fundamental skills with SQL and mapping applications.
  • Apply the concepts of the GIS project Management.
  • Decide between an Open Source and commercial software based on the project requirements.
  • Integrate Remote Sensing and GPS techniques to the GIS process.
  • Discuss the ethical issues presented by use of GIS in contemporary society.
