DePaul University Certificate in GIS
The Certificate Program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) requires 20 hours of instruction. It provides sophisticated education in cartography/ GIS and proper training for employment in related industries and consulting.
There are five required courses to complete the certificate:
- GIS I (GEO 241)*
- GIS II (GEO 242)*
- GIS III (GEO 244)*
- Remote Sensing (GEO 243)*
- Research Techniques (GEO 391)
*Please note that GEO 241, GEO 242, GEO 244 and GEO 243 all carry a prerequisite of ISP120 Quantitative Reasoning OR equivalent. GIS I, II and III must also be taken in sequence.
DePaul�s Geography Department offers geotechnology courses which prepare students for careers in such areas as international development; environmental monitoring and management; intelligence and diplomacy; the geodemographic, marketing and real estate industries; urban and regional planning; geographic education; and the information technology sector involved in the design and production of maps and spatial databases. Recent graduates of the Department of Geography�s Certificate Program work for the U.S. Government (NSA, EPA, National Imaging and Mapping Agency, Department of Labor, Bureau of the Census), engineering and environmental consulting firms, cartographic production firms (Rand McNally, Mappix, Nystrom), and state and local government agencies such as the Illinois Department for Natural Resources or the City of Chicago. Many students also find employment in the burgeoning non-profit sector.
Enrolling in the GIS Certificate Program
Current students who wish to declare the GIS Certificate Program need to fill out the Declaration of Program Plan form. Please input "GIS Certificate" in the "Minor 1" or "Minor 2 field" in addition to filling out the other required fields. Please note that if you arlready have a declared minor(s) this Certificate will be added in addition to that program(s) and will not replace a previously declared minor(s).
Students interested in completing the GIS Certificate who are not currently enrolled at DePaul University need to apply to DePaul online as an undergraduate, non-degree seeking student.
